About Us
Schizophrenia Research Foundation
The Schizophrenia Research Foundation (SCARF), founded in 1984 by Padma Bhushan Dr. M. Sarada Menon, is a not-for-profit mental health organization committed to the rehabilitation and holistic care of persons with severe mental disorders. Over the past four decades, SCARF has established itself as a leader in clinical care, research, training, and advocacy, offering comprehensive mental health services for young people, adults, and the elderly. SCARF works extensively to improve mental health at the community level, partnering closely with state departments, other NGOs, and local stakeholders to design and implement innovative, scalable interventions.

Department of Youth Mental Health
The Department of Youth Mental Health (YMH) at SCARF was established in 2021 to address the pressing need for youth-focused mental health services. Building on SCARF’s pioneering work since 2003 in early intervention for First Episode Psychosis, we provide integrated, youth-centered services for individuals aged 10 to 24. We adopt a holistic approach, encompassing mental health promotion, prevention, management, and aftercare to support young people across the entire continuum of mental health needs. Through clinical care, community-based interventions, advocacy, and co-designed solutions developed with young people themselves, we ensure timely, compassionate, and comprehensive support. By combining evidence-based practices with innovative, youth-friendly strategies, the department empowers young people to maintain their well-being, build resilience, and access the care they need to thrive.
Vision
“To create a society of emotionally empowered and healthy young people realizing their fullest potential.”
Mission
Our Approach
At the Department of Youth Mental Health, our approach is grounded in holistic, youth-centered care that addresses the mental, emotional, and social well-being of young people. All our services and programs are co-created with young people to ensure they are relevant, empowering, and responsive to their needs. We are committed to justice, equity, and inclusivity, ensuring that every young person, regardless of background or circumstance, has access to timely and compassionate support. By fostering a safe, supportive, and participatory environment, we aim to empower youth to take an active role in their mental health, build resilience, and thrive in all areas of life.
