Sowmya Dhanasekaran
Clinical Psychologist
Hi, I’m Sowmya Dhanasekaran. I work in the YMH clinic as a clinical psychologist. I feel incredibly privileged to support children, adolescents, and young adults as they navigate the often complex challenges of growing up. In my work, I aim to create a safe, non-judgmental space where young people feel heard, respected, and understood. I work with a range of mental health concerns including anxiety, low mood, stress, self-esteem, relationship difficulties, and trauma. My approach is collaborative and flexible where I tailor therapy to suit each individual’s needs, drawing on evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) and many more.
I believe that building strong therapeutic relationships is at the heart of effective care. I work closely with families, schools, and other professionals where appropriate, to ensure young people receive consistent and holistic support. I’m passionate about empowering young people to better understand themselves, build resilience, and develop the tools they need to move forward with confidence.
When I’m not working, I enjoy spending my time relaxing in my garden with a good cup of coffee, and exploring new cafes to try out different recipes. I quite enjoy the thrill of driving(with no traffic) along the beach. My appreciation for art runs deep, where I try my best to capture my imagination through creative expression. I love engaging with any form of media that sparks emotion and tells a story well.
